The Disadvantages to Using a Robot in Forex Trading

When you first start to hear about automated trading systems it definitely sounds like a dream come true. You get to trade a successful strategy made by a successful trader without any effort with the system making all relevant decisions regarding your trading activity. The first thing that people new to the area of automated trading hear is how great trading with robots is and how many great advantages it has. Expert advisor sellers talk about the great aspects of robots like not having any humans involved and how this trading technique can make anyone reach within a very small amount of time. However it turns out that trading with Forex robots - Forex automated trading systems - has many disadvantages that not only make profiting from Forex automated trading systems hard, but even harder than making a profit manually in trading. Within the following paragraphs I will attempt to explain some of these disadvantages to you giving you an idea of where you should start if you really want to be successful with automated trading systems.
First of all, it is good to understand why automated trading systems are not a holy grail and why they won't be able to make everyone rich, even if trading is simply mechanical. The main disadvantage of Forex robots is that due to the simplicity of their loading and execution, they stimulate usage by people who have little or no experience in trading. Since the robots are still being run and executed by humans they still fall victim to human psychology. In the end someone decides whether the robot will be running or not and this makes people unsuccessful with them. How do you know if a system is profitable? How do you know if it will work under varied market conditions? Do you stop trading them within a draw down?
When people start trading an automated trading system and they fall into an unprofitable period, they simply do not know how to act because they are not traders; they are simply regular guys who have entered the automated trading arena with the hope of finding quick and easy riches. Because they start to lose money they simply quit trading the robot. Since all long term profitable systems eventually get into long term periods of draw down (draw downs that in my experience last from 100 to even 500 days), people end up quitting all trading systems they find until they start to learn - the hard way - how automated trading systems work. Most of them will not take this road and they will never learn how to evaluate, use and be successful with Forex robots and the few that do will take a journey that will most likely last 3 to 10 years.
Therefore the main disadvantages of automated trading systems are that it will take a lot of knowledge to learn how to use and trade a robot successfully and that to use one you don't need almost any knowledge. You get a very dangerous combination in which people can very easily get their hands on the software but judging the quality, evaluating the systems and being able to trade those that are indeed likely to be long term profitable is terribly hard. In the end, anyone who wishes to truly achieve success in automated trading needs to understand manual trading and programming, they need to understand the markets and the computers a very difficult thing to do indeed. It will not be easy, in fact it will be terribly hard and you will many times get disappointed and wish you had never began this journey in the first place. Is it worth it? I think that when you finally get there you will see that it is.
Think about it, if it was that easy everyone would be living from automated trading... The reason why everyone is not, is because the above mentioned disadvantages make successful trading with Forex robots absolutely hard. However, it is certainly possible.

Forex Robot Setup - A How-To Guide

Did you know that you could make your Forex transactions completely automated? With the advent of Forex robots and Expert Advisor (EA) systems in the market, Forex trading has taken on a whole new meaning. Imagine, all you have to do is run a computer in which the EA software has been installed, as long as Forex is operational, and all your transactions will be completely taken care of. With very little drawdown, and a remarkably consistent income generation, these robots have given investors more room to breathe than they could have ever imagined.
What is an EA or a Forex robot?
An Expert Advisor (a Forex 'robot') is a computer program that replaces human traders. The software merges into your Forex trading platform (such as Metatrader) and analyses the market trends 24 hours a day, finding opportunities for making profitable trades. It is capable of entering trade, managing it till it has been completed, and successfully exiting it as well.
What are the advantages of using an EA?
For one, a computer does not have emotions. Humans sometimes make rash or wrong decisions because of psychological factors that may come into play in the highly volatile currency market. Not only does the EA prevent you from missing any trade opportunities, but it also makes all the right decisions for you within a self-imposed risk-limit, so as to minimize your losses (if at all) as far as possible. Each Forex robot is different, as each has been programmed or developed by a different person (or groups of people). This gives us a wide range of robots to choose from.
Some of the newest Expert Advisors include Caliber FX Pro, Forex Quake, Forex Megadroid, Forex Spectrum, A.I. Forex Robot, FAPTurbo and Forex Bling. These are only a very select few of the countless Forex robots available.

Humanizing Automated Forex Trading Systems With Machine Learning

Automated Forex Trading systems do have advantages over manual human trading. Automated trading system can monitor the Forex markets 24 hours a day; automated systems are completely disciplined to the set of system rules and never stray; automated trading systems are immune to greed and fear and emotion never influences their trading decisions; automated Forex systems always follow the money management rules defined by the user. However, it is apparently very ironic that these basic principles, that define the strengths of a system, are also many times its downfall. Forex robots cannot 'analyze' the market price action like a human being. Therefore, Forex Robots Enter Every Trade that meets a defined set of conditions. Human Traders Most Often Do Not!
Prevailing sentiment contends that, out of all Forex traders, only a small percentage are successful long term. The referenced figures vary depending on the source cited, but the percentages consistently average in the 5% to 8% range. In alignment with this figure, very few Forex robots survive the tests of live account Forex trading, with a mere 1% to 2% surviving more than a few months prior to their rule-sets becoming obsolete, and the losses begin piling up. The ideal solution is obvious. Combine the discipline and tireless availability of an automated Forex robot with the savvy and experience of a successful human trader.
It is in this vein that much of the groundbreaking research on algorithmic Forex trading lies. By utilizing machine learning to 'teach' an algorithm certain prevailing 'human' decisions that affect trade entry, existing systems for trading Forex automatically can be converted. Some research shows that training entry tactics with machine learning strategies (Genetic Programming and Neural Networks to name a few) do significantly improve the performance of systems on out-of-sample data. These conclusions lend some early credibility to the notion of Forex trading using machine learning.
The concept that we discuss here departs from this strategy in that we use the learning technologies to train sets of 'humanized' data as opposed to raw data prior to a condition. By utilizing these datasets, the learning becomes 'why did the human enter this trade?' vs. 'do the raw data support entering a trade right now?' When the learning begins to focus on more abstract data, the resulting systems tend to become more robust, or tend to work better in varying market conditions than those that simply attempt to identify winning Forex trades from raw indicator data. The concept is that basic indicator conditions trigger a trade Set-Up, for instance, a fast moving average crosses a slower moving average. The learning algorithm then works to filter these set-ups using the training it acquired from human training datasets. The automated trading system says, "Based on what I've learned from my expert human teacher, does this set-up look like a good deal?" Instead of, "The computational result using all of the empirical data is greater than the defined variable, get in or out?"
In summary, applying machine learning strategies to teach 'human' tactics for automated Forex trading system design, can be much more effective in producing robust Forex systems than by utilizing the technologies in an attempt to forecast market direction. In future articles I will expand on this method and provide information on applications and technologies available to employ these concepts.

B. End of Day Forex Trading Systems Can Bring Huge Profits

End of day Forex trading systems are often times overlooked in favor of short-term systems such as those scalping Forex pips. While daytrading in the Forex market has become more popular there is and always will be tremendous profit opportunities using longer-term Forex charts.
Long-term Forex trading has some distinct advantages. The first of these advantages is part of the basic nature of long-term trading. In shorter-term Forex trading traders seek to automate their strategies in order to achieve hands-free trading. In longer-term trading where trades can continue for days, weeks, months, and even years automation is not necessarily important. Once you're in the trade and you have your risk and money management measures in place there is really very little else for you to do. Basically, you are free to monitor your positions as you see fit.
End of day Forex trading systems also have another advantage and that is the advantage of lower transaction costs. This doesn't mean that the transaction cost of a single trade is cheaper than it is with a short-term system, it simply means that there are fewer trades therefore there are fewer transaction costs. It is typical that the transaction costs represent a larger percentage of the profits in short-term Forex trading than a long-term.
Many beginning traders shy away from longer-term Forex trading because they fear that there may be some large overnight move against their open position. In reality, a large overnight move can just as easily move in your direction as against it. It is, however easy to understand why some traders seek to minimize their risks by daytrading.
Successful Forex traders the world over recognize the power and profit potential of end of day Forex trading systems. Traders who are just starting out or who have limited capital can still take advantage of staying in the big moves simply by trading mini lots or micro lots

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/2312590
